Dog Mauled at our Dog Park

Yesterday afternoon a tiny 6lb chihuahua-papillon mix named Gus was mauled to death at our small breed dog park by a border collie/pitbull mix.

The owner of the collie/pitbull mix let his dog into the small dog park because he got along better with small dogs. The pitbull/border collie was playing with another dog and then charged after Gus. He flipped him and grabbed him by the neck. Gus screamed and when he was finally pulled off he was limp and screaming. He died on the way to the vet.

Charges have been filed as this dog has attacked other dogs at the park, but this is his first first death. As pitbulls are illegal in Ontario the dog will likely be euthanized.

Mom stopped taking us to the dog park because owners of larger breeds were using the park and she was afraid of something like this happening.

My word, how sad!
I can't believe an owner of a large dog was allowed in the small park. There's no excuse. The owner is definitely at fault.
Overexcitement of a large dog can lead to trouble way too fast when tiny dogs are involved. As an owner, why would you even risk it with such a powerful dog?
I'm saddened and disgusted.

I am sorry that you had to hear about such an awful thingy. You are too sweet to know such terrible things go on in this world.

That's a very sad situation. We are so sorry to hear that it happened. We don't go to our dog park here because mom doesn't want me off leash with other dogs she doesn't know. She's just playing it safe and going somewhere else so we can walk. Lots of love, Holly and mom

What a terrible thing to happen! Of course it does make me wonder if it was over excitement of da dog or if it was sumptin else...like not bein' trained correctly.

Our hearts go out to da family of Gus.

Oh, how very awful. I'm so very sorry. And what a really, REALLY dumb human! Grrrrrrr! This kinda stupid human behavior just makes my mom and me all kinds of upset.

I don't really like to go to dog parks (it's kinda overwhelming for me) but mom and dad used to take Brudder Ranger. They decided to stop taking him, though, cuz they were afraid of something like that happening, too. I mean, it's not like they test how nice a doggie is before they come in. And like I said, some owners are full of the dumbs.

Oh no, how awful and sad!! :( That is the scary thing about dog parks. Sorry to hear about poor Gus, and the bigger doggie too. It's unfortunate that he has to take the fall for his owner's mistake(s).

What a tragic situation. Poor Gus and family. This is why I, too, stopped going to dog parks - you just cannot control what kind of people will bring their dogs in these irresponsibly. With all of the bad press Pit Bulls get, their owners should really be more diligent about keeping them safe. A tragedy, really, for all involved.

Words fail me right now, poor Gus's family and I am so very, very glad your Mom stopped taking you there.
There are some very irresponsible humans in the world.

Oh wow. That is awful. You know, people just cannot be trusted. That man should have known his dog better and not let him off the leash. And what was the dog doing at a small dog dog park, anyhow? How irresponsible! We just can't believe it.

How sad for that poor family. :( We will be thinking of them.

That's just awful ...poor Gus. My heart breaks for his family.

I agree with Mayzie - humans are so stupid sometimes. I hope the dog's owner is severely punished.

That was so sad - poor little pup. Mom won't let us go to the dog park - too many irresponsible owners, she says. Run free now, sweet little pup.

Hey Girls.
So sorry to hear about this. Very sad. Everyone should keep their difficult pups on a leash. I have been known to be very anti-social, so I am almost always on a leash. I don't like it, but it's definitely for the best. Thanks for reminding us to be careful out there.
